Discuss > Johnny Cash
Hmm.... so you're looking for a little laconic? A little punk? Some storytelling thrown in? Here are some suggestions to get you started, though I've taken a somewhat broad approach to the question given your already comparatively diverse lineup of faves...
-- There's a Johnny Cash Children's Album from 1974 or '75 which you should hear if you haven't already.
-- Key Wilde & Mr. Clarke are often more raved-up and punk than Cash's country, but given your other preferences, I think that's a good place to start.
-- Hullabaloo are pretty rootsy.
-- The Hollow Trees are a more fanciful Johnny Cash, methinks.
-- The Dreyer Family Band, Mr. David, and Johnny Keener also have albums that reminded me of the Man in Black, but it may be more difficult to track those albums down.
Hope that helps -- let us know what you found!
Billy Kelly's song "The Legend of Johnny Box!"

Molly's right, of course -- it's a glorious song.
I didn't focus on individual songs -- there are lots of variations of "I shot a man in Reno once..." cleaned up for the kiddos.
Awesome! Will try these out and let you know the toddler verdict. Thank you!
Hi,
I'm in need of some musical advice. My 2 1/2 year old daughter is a huge Johnny Cash fan. We're not sure how it happened since neither her Mom or Dad are especially big JC listeners. Nevertheless, we have worn out several CDs, have a playlist devoted to the Man in Black, and have listened to her sing the songs. My question is: Are there any performers out there for kids with a Johnny Cash vibe/sound? We listen to Laurie Berkner, Dan Zanes, Ambrosia Parsley, The Jimmies, They Might Be Giants currently. Can you add to our playlist? Many thanks!
